Therapy for Emotional Overwhelm
When your emotions feel like too much
Sometimes emotions arrive so intensely that it becomes difficult to think about anything other than making them stop.
You might experience rapid shifts in mood, intense anxiety, anger, emptiness, fear of abandonment, impulsive urges, or moments when you feel completely overwhelmed. You may shut down, withdraw, react in ways you later regret, hurt yourself, or experience thoughts of suicide when the distress feels unbearable.
If this happens, it doesn’t mean your emotions are too much. There may be reasons your emotional system has learned to respond as strongly as it does.
Understanding those reasons can be important, but when you’re in the middle of an overwhelming moment, insight alone may not be enough.
How I Can Help
Our work can include both understanding what lies beneath your emotions and learning what to do when they become overwhelming.
Drawing from approaches including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), we can build practical skills for tolerating distress, regulating intense emotions, staying present, and navigating difficult interpersonal situations.
Alongside these skills, we can explore the experiences, triggers, needs, and relationship patterns that may be contributing to your emotional responses.
